Bend - John Day
We headed east along Highway 26 to the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
This park is split into several areas - Clarno, Painted Hills , Sheep Rock.
The detour to the Painted Hills is well worth it. The fascinating colours of the landscape are breathtaking.
At Sheep Rock, the Visitor Centre explains about the fossils and geology of the area.
Nearby there is the Blue Basin and its Island in the Time Trail. Here you can see fossils and marvel at the blueness of the rock.
East of Sheep Rock , Highway 26 goes through Picture Gorge where you can see 17 layers of lava.
