Day Six John Day - Baker City

Click for Baker City, Oregon Forecast

Hell's Canyon

Heading out of John Day on Highway 26 you pass the Strawberry Mountains and making a small detour, arrive in Sumpter. This used to be a thriving gold town. In the summer a steamtrain runs in the valley.

Baker City was an important stopping place on the Oregon Trail. Here there is the Oregon Trail Interpretative Center which sits high over the plains.

East of Baker City are the Wallowa mountains and the Snake river which winds its way through Hells Canyon.

Following the road to Hells Canyon Dam actually takes you into Idaho and a time change. Don't change your watch, you have to come back the way you came. Hells Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America at 2.440 metres.
