Day Six Carlsbad

Click for Carlsbad, New Mexico Forecast

The day started with an energetic walk into the depths of the Earth - into the Carlsbad Caverns. We decided to walk down via the Natural Entrance Route instead of taking the lift - definitely the best alternative. The rangers along the way were very informative - it was very interesting to hear that earth tremors from the nuclear testing at White Sands Range aren't felt in the caverns.

The Big Room is full of stalactites, stalagmites and various stone shapes. It takes about an hour to wander around the cavern. Fascinating even though we didn't see any of the famous Carlsbad bats!

In the afternoon we decided to go to Texas and see its highest mountain - Guadalupe Peak in the Guadalupe Mts National Park. The National Park is mainly for hikers but the scenery is wonderful.
