Day Two Denver - Canon City

Click for Golden, Colorado Forecast

First stop on a fine spring morning was Golden where Buffalo Bill is buried.

Our next stop was the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument - a bit out of the way but well worth a visit. As well as the petrified sequoia stumps, you can visit the Hornbek Homestead.

Skyline DriveWe carried on southwards through Cripple Creek, a victorian mining town, and Victor to Canon City. In Canon City we first visited the Monastery before driving out to the Royal Gorge Bridge. The bridge towers over 1,000 feet above the Gorge. On the way back into town we drove up and along Skyline Drive - definitely not for the faint-hearted as the narrow road runs along the top of a ridge. Mind you, the view from the top of Canon City is magnificient.

View of Canon CityWe visited the Colorado Territorial Prison Museum which is located directly next door to the present State prison. The museum is quite eerie - the stories of the prisons inmates and their destinies are interesting, if not scary.
